Many people want to know if they can play CS:GO on PS4, Xbox or other consoles. The answer is No, Counter-Strike:Global Offensive (CSGO) is not available on Playstation 4 or other consoles. It was not released on that generation of consoles and it was never factored into the backwards compatibility plans that were made for either the Playstation 4 or the Playstation 5.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (better known as CSGO) is one of the more popular shooters available online. The successor to the wildly popular Counter-Strike, the game pits players against one another in teams as they both try to complete objectives and take down one another as efficiently as possible.
As one of the older competitive shooters on the market, the game has a solid, built-in player base. It’s no surprise, then, that so many people would want to play it on as many different platforms as possible.
Is CSGO available on PS4 or XBOX?
The short answer to this one is “no”, while the longer answer is a bit more complicated. CSGO was released all the way back in 2012, just a year before the Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
It would make sense to many, then, that the game would show up on that generation of consoles. While there were releases for the previous generation, there simply wasn’t ever a port onto those consoles.
For a brief period of time, players could still buy CSGO on the Xbox store, but the game has since been taken down. This isn’t quite the same thing as the game being playable on the Xbox One, of course, but it does still sort of count as the game being made available for that console.
Regardless of store oversights, though, this game simply wasn’t ever made available on the Playstation 4, the Xbox One, or any other consoles that happened to be released during that generation of console gaming.
Why is CS:GO not on PS4 or other consoles?
This is kind of a tricky question that has a few answers.
The first is that CSGO never had quite the same kind of community on the consoles that it had on the PC. Counter-Strike is very much one of the original online competitive shooters, which means that the community around the game originally grew up playing on PC.
Whether there’s some kind of built-in platform elitism here or players simply prefer to spend their time playing on platforms with which they are already familiar, most players stuck to the PC for this game.
There’s also a question of popularity. Though CSGO did make its way to Xbox One and the Playstation 4, CSGO hasn’t quite been the global phenomenon that older version of the game had managed to become.
That’s not to say that CSGO isn’t popular or that it doesn’t have a devoted player base, but rather to say that there was simply less demand for the game on the newer generation of consoles. It simply may not have made much economic sense for Valve to release yet another port of the game onto systems that had buyers who were unlikely to check out the game.
Finally, there are almost assuredly some technical issues that might have caused problems trying to bring the game over to the Playstation 4.
Those who are familiar with the Playstation 3 will recall that it had a very unique blend of hardware and software that not only made development more difficult for the console, but that continued to make it very hard for Playstation to bring over the original version of games that debuted on that console to its newer consoles. The time and money needed to re-port CSGO from the ground up might have just been too much for anyone to consider.
On which game platforms can you play CS:GO ?
The good news for fans of CSGO is that you can still play CSGO if you’re willing to either play the original version of the game or if you are willing to get your hands on some legacy hardware. This might not be the answer that everyone wants, but it’s definitely one that will allow you to play the game.
The simplest way to play CSGO is, of course, to jump on your PC. Given that the game is a decade old, the requirements aren’t too stringent and virtually anything that can run a modern game will allow you to play Counter-Strike. The online downside here is that the PC community has had a decade of experience in playing the game, so jumping in now will put you at a disadvantage.
If you want to play on a console, though, you’ll have to grab either an Xbox 360 or a Playstation 3. The bad news, though, is that the official servers for these games are no longer available. That means that you can only play local versions of the game if you have these consoles, which does take some of the fun out of this multiplayer classic.
