Is Madden 22 Crossplay/Cross Platform ?

A considerable number of gamers feel that the Madden franchise defines sports video games. The first entry in the franchise was released all the way back in 1988. By 1996 Madden had become the best-selling sports franchise on consoles. And it would continue to see refinements and continued success over the years.

At the moment almost everyone who’s interested in sports and console games would love to play the latest release – Madden 22. But it raises an important question. Is Madden 22 Crossplay and Cross Platform?

Much of the appeal of sports games comes from their ability to let you play with or against your friends. But what consoles, if any, actually support crossplay with Madden 22?

Is Madden 22 Game Crossplay / Crossplatform?

One of the biggest questions for every new Madden release centers around support for crossplay. It’s a feature that almost everyone wants. And it’s something that everyone suspects will appear eventually.

Unfortunately, Madden 22 doesn’t mark the point where crossplay finally becomes a reality. Madden 22 only has some limited capacity for crossplay. There are some minor caveats. But by most definitions, Madden 22 doesn’t really have crossplay or cross platform support.

Is Madden 22 Cross Platform Between PS4 and PS5?

It’s quite common for the PS4 and PS5 to have some level of crossplay. After all, there’s a convergence of underlying hardware and company server support.

Even franchises with little to no crossplay often have some measure of compatibility between the PS4 and PS5. Because of that convergence, people often assume that this will be the case for Madden 22 on the PS4 and PS5.

Unfortunately, there isn’t any Madden 22 crossplay on the PlayStation 4 and 5. There are some solid reasons for the lack of crossplay. But that also means the chances of crossplay being introduced in a future patch or update are also quite low.

Is Madden 22 Cross Platform Between Xbox One and X/S?

The Xbox One and X/S are in a similar situation as the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. It’s normally quite common for games to at least have crossplay support between the two Microsoft platforms. And Windows is often tied in with the Xbox as well. But, once again, this isn’t the case for Madden 22. There’s no support for crossplay between the Xbox One and X/S.

Why Does Madden 22 Not Have Crossplay Support?

The lack of crossplay support takes a lot of players by surprise. It’s one of the biggest things sports fans look for in a game. And it’s natural to assume that a series that has been around for decades would have tackled that feature at some point.

The lack of crossplay can seem like an arbitrary or even strange choice at first. But there is a good reason why there’s no crossplay and why it probably won’t show up in the future.

Games with crossplay depend on a standardized experience on all of the platforms. A fair game requires everyone to essentially work with the same rules.

And on top of that, the underlying server supporting crossplay needs to have full parity between every connection. A server needs to be able to instantly change elements on system B to perfectly represent a change on system A.

You can think of this as somewhat similar to a chess game being played by phone or mail. The chess games can run in perfect sync because both the board and the pieces are the same.

But if one person was, for some reason, using fewer chess pieces they’d run into a problem. The same thing happens with video games when a port has different capabilities.

It’s essentially like trying to keep a game in sync that’s using different pieces. And this is the underlying issue with crossplay in Madden 22. It’s fairly common for games released on multiple consoles to have very few concrete differences from each other.

For example, the changes between a PS4 and PS5 game often only come down to texture sizes or resolution. But that’s not the case with Madden 22.

The older and next-gen versions of Madden 22 are tightly bound to the underlying hardware. The PlayStation 5 version of Madden 22, for example, isn’t just the PlayStation 4 game with higher quality textures.

Madden 22 really takes advantage of the PlayStation 5’s capabilities to offer better AI, on-field momentum, and many other enhancements.

The game is extremely similar on all of the supported platforms. But they’re not similar enough to let people play in perfect sync. And because of this, there’s probably never going to be any crossplay in Madden 22.

However, there is one minor exception to this general rule about crossplay in Madden 22. Both the PlayStation 5 and the X/S have backward compatibility with their respective predecessors.

The PlayStation 5 can play most PlayStation 4 games. And the X/S can play most Xbox One games. This means that, in theory, you can simply use the older-gen version of Madden 22 on the newer-gen system.

And from there you’d be able to play with other users running on those older-gen systems. Backward compatibility is often a little unreliable. But in the case of Madden 22, it’s probably about as close to real crossplay as we’re likely to ever see.

On Which Gaming Platforms Can You Play Madden 22?

Madden 22 might not have crossplay support. But that doesn’t mean that only people on a few selected consoles will be able to enjoy it. Madden 22 has been released on all of the major platforms. This includes Sony’s PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. And, of course, it’s been released on Microsoft’s Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

Madden 22 has even expanded past consoles and entered into both the personal computer and cloud gaming markets. Madden 22 is available to PC gamers and on Google’s Stadia platform.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that crossplay isn’t supported between any of these devices or platforms. If you want to play with friends then they’ll need to be running Madden 22 on the same type of system.
